Why Do You Need A Goal

Posted in Goal Setting on Dec 15, 2008

In the daily lives of many people, goal setting is not the most important part. It is because they think that goal setting is not useful. It does not have immediate result. I agree with that. It is not can of soft drink you get in dispensing machine. All rich and famous people have had goals which has pushed them beyond their limits to get what they want in life. Before you make it you must know why you need a goal

Chattering Of The Mind

The mind is a stupid of convoluted matter which needs a guide. All religion is a form of guidance. In Islam the 5 times prayer is to cut off this chattering of the mind and get into the oneness of purpose or goal. NIRODHA in yoga is a state of the mind where it is not distracted by random thought but it is fully absorbed in the object of focus. This can occur in meditation or a person is fully engaged in something.

We are experiencing about 80,000 to 100,000 thoughts per day. Not all these are ever going to materialise. A goal is a guide or signpost to make the thoughts directed to a purpose and fullfillment. To deter the chattering of the mind a goal comes in handy. You do not need unwanted thoughts. Your thoughts can be constructive if it is related to your goal

My thoughts are my company; I can bring them together, select them, detain them, dismiss them -Walter Landor

Point Of Destination

A goal is essential to create a destination. A point of destination allows the mind to search a target. Like how a river flows to the sea a point of destination will bring us there. Having a point of destination is like skiing downwards. If there is no point of destination we find ourselves swimming aimlessly in a vast ocean.

A hunter will be called a hunter if he shoots a deer or a tiger. But if he shoots casually in the air will he become a hunter? In order to condition the mind to success or to achieve something in your life if has to have a target.

A sailor without a destination cannot hope for a favourable wind

By having a goal or a point of destination it is easy to make decisions. For illustration, write out a goal that you want to do in the next 15 minutes. Your list may appear as follows:

-I want to make a glass of lemon tea

Try making a lemon tea for the next 15 minutes. The sixteenth minute you will be drinking a glass of lemon tea. This is a simple example of how you can manage your mind to do the things you want to do. You can change anything in an instant if you know what you want. Most of the time we are living ‘blindly’ and not objectively. Do you want to increase your monthly income ten times? Do you want to travel to all Europe within the next 5 years? WHAT DO YOU WANT?

A point of destination is what the mind needs for any success story. When you know what you want then you will find the road to reach there. If point B is defined it is easy to build an infrastructure from point A.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure means the mode to connect from point A to point B. Point A is where you are now. Point B is your destination. If you want to go to a shopping centre 5 kilometeres from where you are now you will either take the bus or the public transport. You can also drive there. But if you want to travel to a location 700 kilometers away i think the the better way is to travel by air. When a point of destination is defined the way to get there becomes clear.

If your goal is to increase your income 10 times than what your are earning now, do you think you have to change your strategy of cash flow? Yes you must change. It is impossible to do ten jobs in a month but you can do a job which can give you more income. Oil is essential commodity to the world economy. Perhaps you can learn some skill to join the oil industry.

The path to our destination is not always a straight one. We go down the wrong road, we get lost, we turn back. Maybe it doesn’t matter which road we embark on. Maybe what matters is that we embark – Babara Hall

The ways of reaching a goal are many. This is the advantage of making a goal. Think about your life right now and work backwards maybe 5 years ago or 10 years ago. You have carried out a goal to reach where you are right now. Am i right to say this?

Prevent Distraction

The obstacle for any success is distraction. Procrastination impedes a goal setting. But distraction is the ‘virus’ which blocks any pursuit of a goal. Most people believe that it is procrastination which close off the road that is drawn from point A to B.

If you have made a goal and if you think that you find that you are ‘procrastinating’ to do it you have to change this belief. It is because procrastination does not survive after you have made a goal. Iin the above example you have said and written :

- I want to make lemon tea within the next 15 minutes

If you have said and written that :

- I wish i have a lemon tea today
- I pray for a lemon tea today

then it is unlikely going to happen because you expect something to happen. But when you say you WANT a lemon tea and giving a SPECIFIC TIME FRAME you are actually making a CONSCIOUS GOAL. How then you can postpone what you wanted?

When a path is drawn from point A to B it is easier to deflect distraction or interference. It is because the path has a timeline (SPECIFIC TIME FRAME) and there are ‘things to do’(SIGN POST) along the path to reach your destination. If you goal is to become a real estate agent in the next 6 months, you will not want to spend time going to the cinema with friends (DISTRACTION) as you have to attend the agent course at 7pm tonite. You are moving towards the defined destination.

Mobility

We are not spirits. We are physical beings dealing with physics. In two stages of the human life we can have the concession of being inertia- feotal and a baby. Nature takes for the former and parent caretake the latter. Everything is provide for. Kings and Queens can afford to be inertia most of the time. If you are not in any of the above group you must be mobile.

When the line is drawn from Points A to B and the route is drawn a timeline is scheduled specifically to reach point B – your goal. If your goal is to become a freelance painter in the next 10 years, you must find out the things to reach your destination:

-enroll in a course where painting is taught
-what is the period of this course
-fees to be paid
-make a room ready to keep all your painting gear
-paint at least 2 paintings in a month to see your progress

Write all the above THINGS TO DO specifically in a schedule or a organiser calendar. Follow the schedule closely. A goal will bring a lethargic personality to an active one.

Future Revealed

Fortune telling is admired by many. It is a good business. At times of uncetaintly, people will want to know their future from a fortune teller. They want to pay for the ‘good news’ at any price. When you make a goal, the future is on what you write.

The theory of goal setting is equal to the things you must do at the stipulated time and do it. Mathematically it is Goal (Achievement) = Things to do + Things Done. G=TD +TD. Your future is those things that you are going to carry out. If anyone ask you about your future tell them the following equation:

Future = T2D + TD

The future or things to do of moving to another country will be : to secure a job there, to find an accomodation, to find out the period you need to apply for a permanent resident, the period you need to apply for a citizen of that country. Future is therefore revealed when you make a goal.

Gives You Confidence

I want to own a ‘BMW’ Car within a year. This is my goal and my future. T2D comprises taking up driving licence, knowing the average price of BMW in a year’s time, how much it cost to secure this car monthly. If the car of my choice cost me around $110,000 including road tax, driving licence fees and other taxes i will have to find $916.00 per month to finance my car for the next 10 years.

If the things we want be made into smaller bites it propels our confidence. It is easy to make $916.00 than to look for $100,000. Not necessarily best man wins but all man can win if they know how to make a goal and make it smaller to manage them.

You Become Important

If you are busy you are giving an impression to the other party that you are doing something important. It makes you an expensive person. If you are being observed as a busy person the likely hood of getting to know you gets higher. Take for example the ways bees behave. They are always seen going from flower to flower and going around their hives. When further explored the bees are actually making gold of life – honey.

Statistically only 2 percent of the world population are rich. The other 98 percent most probably do not have goals. So if you make a goal and become busy doing the things to do, you have a majority of the market segment to be able to notice you. In their mind they will ask ‘WHY ARE YOU SO BUSY?’. You suddenly become important in their lives.

He not being born busy busy dying – by Dylan Bob

Know Thyself

A goal put you to task. A calculated task. At every point of your time until you reach destination B you will doing the things to do. In the process, you will be able to know about your self. Usually your weakness is revealed in the process. In the procees of becoming a real estate agent you will have put your self forward to people that your are vibrant seller and buyer of properties. You need to gel with people. If your not a sociable person you will learn how to connect with people. When i attended a course on real estate, the first lesson they taught on how to stand up and shake hands with my person next to me. Knowing your limit is important so that you will be able to correct it.

A goal enforces you to know your true self.
