Earth Hour
Earth Hour is an annual international event organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature/ World Wildlife Fund which request households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for sixty minutes to raise awareness toward the need to take action on climate change. I have been seeing lots of advertisements at bus stops and in the mass media to remind and encourage our fingers to switch off that non essential current supply. The embossed number 60 painted with the world map as its skin is a popular icon for the moment.
Earth Hour has also received free publicity from the Google Corporation last year until the end of Earth Hour – the Google homepage in the United States, Colombia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland and the UK was turned to a black background. Their tagline is, “We’ve turned the lights out. Now it’s your turn – Earth Hour”
Earth Hour is definitely is enriching for the planet earth. Despite our differences based on faiths, beliefs, background, location, colour and build we are one in this one hour episode to save the earth. The greenhous gas emissions reductions of from 25 to 40 percent are necessary by 2020 to reduce the impact of global warming which is causing sea level rise and numerous other problems. Earth Hour is a symbolic celebration for the world to realise that we have only one world for our survival. We have to survive.
These are my goals for Earth Hour :
I will not blog for that hour – I will not use my personal computer
I will not boil water for coffee
I will not take the public transport for that moment – I think I will walk back home
I will not turn on my office lights
What have you done for Earth Hour – Mother Earth?
