A yogurt a day keeps virus away. This was how I concluded in my last essay on how to minimise virus formation in our body. Read how to contain H1N1 – actify good bacteria. Our immune system has to be strong for diseases not to take root in our body system.

Risk Factors

There are risk factors has been identified by William H Redd PhD and and Paul B Jacobsen PhD in their 1988 writing on the relationship of emotions and cancer. One on stress and cancer and the other is personality traits. The last of which is personal habits like smoking. Though smoking is believed to have a direct link of cancer development, I personally think that it is not so. I have seen people whom I know who smokes and suffering from cancer and people who smoke and lead a long life and dies. However, I find that between these two people the variable factors are that they do different jobs for living and they are from different ethnic background. The person who lived longer smoking is a Malay man whose job is to make meat strings in a stick – making satay. When I saw this Malay man, whose iconic presence was to have a cigarette in-between his lips, he was in the eighties and skewing small pieces of turmeric coated meat into wood sticks. He died at the age of 90 plus.

The other person (age 50) who is also a “chained smoker” but he had been doing a very stressful job. I have consistently witnessed him as an angry and rough person. He is now suffering from cancer. To claim that vegetarianism can cut your risk of cancer by half is not conclusive. Mr Steve Job who passed away recently is a strict vegetarian. He had been a strict vegan since at the age of 19. I also do not want to write about personality traits. Patients who give up or do not have the “fighting spirit” from illness had died from certain cancers than others who appeared less well adjusted to the situation. Only one factor left for me to write about is stress and cancer.

Stress

My 2 cents worth to write about stress and cancer has some basis. There is some similarity between the lives of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Both made measurable impact on human lives. They make our computing and communication easy. They lead stressful lives by their innovating technologies and software. The definition of Bill Gates is from a business magnate to a philanthropist. Steve Jobs died as a visionary and genius. Both were born in 1955, knew how to attract affluence. However, one has taken a route of a giver and the other died as a taker.  In my earlier post on Stressless Living – Actify These Tips I have thinly written about the good Samiratan works.

I see the human race as one body and we help each other to stay alive and healthy. As how a virus can demolish our cell codes and replicate their own to effect cancerous cells in a body, we have to forge togetherness in our pursuit to survive. We have to support each other like building blocks without any conditions or for profits. We push each other not to win a competition but to finish the race together as one body. By this, we enrich our lives and other people lives.

 Giver

How can we give if we do not have enough? This kind of mind-set is what economist is teaching us since college- limited means and unlimited wants. They based on an assumption that at any period the earth has limited resources. However, you can still influence someone’s life in a smallest way possible. Be a Good Samaritan by creating an excess out of your income and give it to society.

Psychologist Jennifer Crocker found out how peoples’ goal affects their self-worth. Researchers found that compassionate students became more responsive to their roommates as they built a mutually caring relationship. Their self-esteem rose. When people give, they feel like they are making difference to others. Giving another person based on caring boost his or her self-respect.

There is a relationship between low self-esteem and depression. Research also showed that depressed people are more susceptible to medical ailments or even cancer. You do not have to become a millionaire to give. You can give something valuable where it does not cost much. Like how I am creating posts after posts to create value to people who reads it free.

Creation

From microscopic level to macro level, every entity is creating a new environment. When cells stop communicating, the body immune system breaks for foreign intrusion. Our body become sick. If Steve had been a giver, he would have prevented death for a longer time. Steve said that “You know, my main reaction to this money thing is that it’s humorous, all the attention to it, because it’s hardly the most insightful or valuable thing that’s happened to me”. He has forgotten that with that money he can cure the world’s 1 billion starving children. He focused on creation new form of technology because he likes to create and felt satisfied about the entire thing. Bill Gates creates things so to reduce inequity.

Newfound wealth has to be shared with your fellow human beings. Earth to earth and dust to dust. This is how our end will be from time immemorial. The creation of Steve Job or Bill Gates will diminish, as someone will go on discovering new things. However, a timeless superstar will never die unless his contribution is to bring about the entire human race to one objective – that is to survive together. Time becomes unlimited.
