A Faceoff : Breakfast And Break Your Fast By Proenrichment

As I was writing my memorandum of going slim I thought I need to share with you of my second thought. I just wanted to be transparent here. It helps to improve communication. I will realy want this blog to a communication hub. So what is my second thought really?

I use the word breakfast to actually mean to break the fast. But is it the right word to use? Let us explore.

Definition of the word Fast

According to dictionary.com there are 3 meanings to the word ‘fast’ :

  • Moving or able to move, operate, function, or take effect quickly; quick; swift; rapid: a fast horse; a fast pain reliever; a fast thinker.
  • To abstain from all food.
  • A chain or rope for mooring a vessel

I am concerned with the meaning ‘ to abstain from all food’. When we mean food it means ‘any nourishing substance that is eaten, drunk, or otherwise taken into the body to sustain life, provide energy, promote growth..’ In everyday speech, we call a friend to a cup of coffee or for a drink when we mean to give him or her a treat of drink or coffee (beverages).

Can coffee is considered a nourishing substance? I love coffee but being addictive can cause some problem. Steve Pavlina wrote a prolific note on why you should give up coffee and how to give it up.

Can coffee be classified as food? It is not entirely nourishing. It is only nourishing to an extent. It all depends on the consumption pattern and our body system.

Any food cannot be all nourishing. It is only nourishing if it is consumed moderately. But then again one man’s meat is another man’s poison. To some only abstinence of food alone ( excluding water or any edible, nourishing liquids) is considered fasting. To others having a lean cuisine is accepted as fasting too. They call themselves as picky eaters and following a diet.

The words we use cannot be entirely accurate to illustrate or show what we experience in reality.

Definition of Breakfast

Break your fast and breakfast are two separate actions: one is to end the abstinence of food ( including water as in Islamic mode of fasting); the other is to eat and drink in the morning. I suggest on thing to clear the complications: to use hyphen when we mean ‘fasting’ : BREAK-FAST

On second thought, the word ‘breakfast’ probably introduced after we go through sleep at least for 8 or 9 hours without food and then wake up for a bite. The first meal of the day! :)
